As a South Jersey resident who frequently visits this area, I promise to never return to GB. Certainly the Chamber of Commerce & its members would prefer our tourism dollars in their cash registers but the metermaid beat you out on a Tueday in April!
On Tuesday,I drove from Millerton NY up beautiful Route 7. I specifically drove to Great Barrington to walk & shop on its Main Street. I sought a birthday gift for my grandson. On exiting the toy store, I saw something on the windshield. To my shock, a $100.00 ticket for parking in a handicap slot was issued. The street was dirt-filled from the winter. Any blue handicap street painting was obscured. While watching not to park in the crosswalk, I backed up into the handicap space.
As a former resident of small, neighboring Monterey I have had to deal with the Town Hall on several occasions. My driving test started and ended there. I have had numerous copies of my Birth Certificate made there (I currently live in Kansas City and even fought with the DMV over the legitimacy of my Long Form and sealed birth certificate), I have even parked there. So to the Jersey person who appears to be a frequent visitor to the area, yes I'm addressing you, you should know the area then. Or, perhaps, when you exit the car you should check your surroundings to ensure you are parked properly (regardless of location). Parking spaces vary in size. There are at least 5 different 'standard' parking sizes I encounter on a daily basis. Last I knew, unless you were driving an extended cab pickup, you could have easily have fit into the parking spots in Great Barrington. I also find it hard to believe there was SO MUCH grime on the street that you couldn't see any lines. I also lived in Northern Maine, Caribou/Limestone and we got way more snow in a week than the Berkshires did in a season. There was never that much grime left over on the streets, after those winters, that we couldn't see lines.
